Lodge vs. Maca, A Cast Iron Competition.
26 Jul 2006

This Lodge & Maca Dutch Oven Duel Leaves You With A Win-Win Victory.

If you've ever had to choose between to positives, you know that you can never lose. Thats the best way to describe these two cast iron competitors. Lodge and Maca dutch ovens are quality at its best in the modern cast iron cooking race. Dutch oven societies across the country hold their annual cooking events using these two brands as the majority cookers of cuisine. Cast iron's even heating and great flavor make it a wonderful cooking tool for any event.

Maca ovens are purposely designed to be a bigger, deeper pot than its Lodge counterpart. With thicker walls for added strength, they can accomadate large masses of hungry attendees at reunions and cookoffs. An offspring of the Maca Supply Company, these heavy duty ovens are manufactured by the Anderson family of Springville, Utah. Currently with two foundry operations (one in India), the idea for larger deeper dutch ovens came from their casting of furnace linings for other industrial equipment manufacturers. Such linings are in the shape of large pots, and in 1980 the first custom order for a large oven was realized. Today, for a moderate fee, you can even request your own logo to be cast on the lid of your new pot.

More towards the everyday market, Lodge has been innovating cast iron for over a century, catering to the needs of the home cook and the outdoor chef. The Lodge line certainly exploits dutch ovens, but also spans the cookware inventory with skillets, fryers, griddles, baking forms and molds, and various combo cookers. Even more popular is the Lodge Logic and Pro-logic series of pre-seasoned cookware. This feature enables you to start cooking right out of the box, whereas new cast iron must be put through the seasoning process yourself. And if that feels to rustic for your tastes, Lodge also provides an enameled cast iron line, providing all the benefits of cast iron combined with a stylish look and dishwasher safe cleaning.

Either choice is a winner, with proven quality, durability and cooking benefits from both makers. All that is left to decide is the size of pot you need for your next function.
